Named after Birkenstraße, ‘Birch Street’, after an avenue of birches.
One of the oldest streets in Moabit, it was laid out from 1822 to 1834, partly to link the former powder mill with the guards artillery’s firing range in the Jungfernheide. It has carried its name since 1823, after the avenue of birches (Birkenallee) that stood there.
