Deutsche Oper

Charlottenburg

Named after the Deutsche Oper, the opera house next door.

The station opened in 1906 as Bismarckstraße. In 1929 it was renamed Städtische Oper after the neighbouring municipal opera, and in 1934 Deutsches Opernhaus, because the house now belonged to the Reich rather than to Berlin. The old opera burned out in the Second World War; two days before Fritz Bornemann’s new building opened in 1961, the station was renamed Deutsche Oper (Bismarckstraße).
