Named after the Jungfernheide, a forest whose name recalls the nuns of Spandau.
'Jungfer' means maiden: the name refers to the nuns of the Benedictine convent in Spandau, which owned the area in the Middle Ages ('Heide' = heath). The once vast forest was greatly reduced between about 1895 and 1960, when Siemensstadt, Charlottenburg-Nord and Tegel airport were built on it.
