Named after the Südstern, a star-shaped square on Berlin's old southern edge.
The square (‘southern star’) takes its name from the star-like pattern of seven streets meeting here, then at the southern edge of Berlin. The station opened in 1924 as Hasenheide and later took the square’s names: Kaiser-Friedrich-Platz in 1933, Gardepionierplatz in 1939. Two years after the war the name was ‘demilitarised’: since 1947 square and station have been called Südstern.
