Denmark Hill

Southwark

Said to be named after Prince George of Denmark, husband of Queen Anne.

Prince George (1653–1708) married Anne in 1683 and is said to have hunted here; one account says he owned a hunting lodge on the east side of the hill. The hill was earlier known as Dulwich Hill, after nearby Dulwich, and John Cary’s map of 1786 still shows that name. The road itself was once Camberwell’s High Street.
