Named after the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew.
'Kew' was first recorded in 1327 as Cayho. It combines Old French kai, a landing place (the root of 'quay'), with Old English hoh, a spur of land, formed here by a bend in the Thames. The gardens were founded in 1759 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
