Named after Leytonstone's High Road, part of an ancient highway from Epping to London.
Leytonstone, first recorded as Leyton-atte-Stone, is Leyton – the settlement on the River Lea – at the High Stone, traditionally described as a Roman milestone. The station opened in 1894 simply as Leytonstone and was renamed Leytonstone High Road in 1949; the Central line's Leytonstone station is a ten-minute walk away.
