Named after London Bridge, the Thames crossing right beside it.
Bridges called London Bridge have crossed here since Roman times; the first, of timber, was built by the founders of Londinium around AD 50. A stone bridge lined with homes and shops, finished in 1209, stood for some 600 years, and until 1729 it was the only road crossing of the Thames below Kingston. The Underground station is the only one on the network with 'London' in its name.
