Named after the New Cross tollgate, set up in 1718 by the New Cross Turnpike Trust.
From the early 18th century travellers on the main road from London to Canterbury and Dover paid tolls there; the gate took its name from a nearby inn, the Golden Cross. The station opened in 1839 as New Cross and was renamed New Cross Gate in 1923, after both New Cross stations passed to the Southern Railway.
