North Greenwich

'Greenwich' means the green harbour or trading place.

It was first recorded as Gronewic in an Anglo-Saxon charter of the early 10th century. The peninsula here, once Greenwich Marshes, was known as East Greenwich in the 19th century; it is now called North Greenwich after the station, opened in 1999. Until 1926 an older North Greenwich station stood across the Thames on the Isle of Dogs, by a ferry to Greenwich.
