Named after the Prince Regent, later King George IV.
George acted as Prince Regent from 1811, during his father's final illness, and became king in 1820. The park was his idea and was named for him; John Nash designed it with James and Decimus Burton, as part of a scheme that included Regent Street. Before that it was Marylebone Park, a hunting ground Henry VIII took at the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
