Ruislip Gardens

Hillingdon

Named after Ruislip, thought to mean the leaping place where rushes grow.

The leap is thought to have been a spot where the River Pinn was narrow enough to jump across. The station opened in 1934 on the Great Western Railway's Birmingham line; the surrounding fields were built over only after it opened, and residents called the new estate 'the Gardens'. We have not yet found out why the name Gardens was chosen.
