Named after Stratford High Street, which follows a causeway built in 1110.
Stratford, first recorded in 1067 as Strætforda, means ‘ford on a Roman road’, from Old English stræt, street, and ford. In 1110 Matilda, wife of Henry I, had a bridge built over the Lea and a causeway laid across the marshes, on the line of today’s High Street. The station here was first Stratford Bridge, then Stratford Market.
