Named after the bridge over the River Ingrebourne between Hornchurch and Upminster.
A bridge has stood here since at least 1375; the brick bridge of 1892 replaced a series of wooden ones. It was also known as Bridge House Bridge or Lower Bridge. Upminster, recorded as Upmynstre in 1062, comes from Old English upp and mynster, possibly the large church on high ground above the Ingrebourne valley.
