'Hampstead' simply means homestead.
It comes from the Anglo-Saxon words ham and stede, and appears in a grant of 986 by King Ethelred the Unready. The area itself was long called West End, a name in use by 1534 because it lay at the west end of a larger estate. West Hampstead was the name the railway chose for its station on West End Lane in 1879.
