White City

Hammersmith and Fulham

Named after the white exhibition buildings of 1908.

The Franco-British Exhibition was held here in 1908, the first of the White City exhibitions; its pavilions, of fibrous plaster, looked like white marble. While the exhibitions lasted, until 1914, the site was called the Great White City. The stadium built at the same time hosted the 1908 Olympic Games. The station took the name in 1947, replacing Wood Lane.
