Woodgrange Park

Newham

Named after Woodgrange, a farm in the forest given to Stratford Langthorne Abbey.

A grange was an outlying estate held by a monastery. In 1189 a charter of Richard I confirmed the abbey's gifts, among them Richard de Montfitchet's grange in the forest – Woodgrange – and the abbey kept it until the Dissolution. In 1877 Thomas Corbett paid £40,000 for land of Woodgrange Farm, and his family built the Woodgrange Estate by 1892.
