Named after the Belgian city of Liège.
Liège, a large city in eastern Belgium, has had close ties with Luxembourg for centuries. The old Duchy of Luxembourg never had a bishop of its own: from 1559 its parishes belonged to the dioceses of Namur and Liège, until a separate Luxembourg church administration was set up in 1840.
