Chingiz Aitmatov (1928–2008), Kyrgyz writer.
Writing mainly in Russian, he became known worldwide after Louis Aragon translated his 1958 novella 'Jamilia' into French in 1959. He was the last Soviet ambassador to Luxembourg (1990–1991), then Russia's ambassador here until 1994, and from 1995 to 2008 Kyrgyzstan's ambassador to the EU, NATO and the Benelux countries.
