Named after 145th Street, one of the 15 extra-wide crosstown streets of 1811.
The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, which set out Manhattan’s numbered grid, made 145th Street one of 15 crosstown streets 100 feet wide. It forms the southern border of Sugar Hill, within Harlem, and continues east over the 145th Street Bridge into the Bronx.
