Named after 183rd Street, one of the West Bronx’s numbered streets.
The Bronx street grid is irregular: like the northernmost part of upper Manhattan, the hilly West Bronx has a relatively free-style grid. Its street numbering largely carries over from upper Manhattan, without matching it exactly. The station is at 183rd Street and Jerome Avenue, in University Heights.
