190 St

Washington Heights, Hudson Heights, Manhattan

Named after 190th Street; originally 190th Street–Overlook Terrace.

Despite the name, the station has no exits to either 190th Street or Overlook Terrace; its head house stands at Margaret Corbin Circle, by Fort Tryon Park. After the American retreat in 1776 the British renamed this area for Sir William Tryon (1729–1788), British governor of colonial New York. Margaret Corbin took over her fallen husband John’s cannon during the 1776 attack and was wounded.
