Named after West 215th Street, in the area once called Tubby Hook.
Before it became Inwood in 1864, much of Manhattan north of Dyckman Street was called Tubby Hook. According to the local history site My Inwood, one account says Dutch settlers named it after the rounded, tub-like outline of an inlet at the west end of Dyckman Street; a 1917 theory saw a corruption of the Dutch ’t Ubregt Hoek, after one Peter Ubrecht.
