34 St–Penn Station (1 2 3)

Midtown, Manhattan

Named after 34th Street and Penn Station, which takes its name from the Pennsylvania Railroad.

The Pennsylvania Railroad built and originally owned the station. Its first building was completed in 1910; demolition of the head house and train shed began in 1963, and the tracks were kept as the smaller underground station of today, on 33rd Street, one block south. The Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 had made 34th Street one of 15 crosstown streets 100 feet wide.
