Named after Fourth Avenue and Ninth Street, which cross here.
Fourth Avenue was paved in the 1890s as a grand parkway resembling Manhattan’s Park Avenue, itself originally part of Manhattan’s Fourth Avenue; Brooklyn’s was rebuilt after 1910 to carry more traffic. Ninth Street, which the line follows through Park Slope, is one of the neighbourhood’s main shopping streets.
