Named after the corner of Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street.
Fifth Avenue grew out of the Middle Road, drawn by surveyor Casimir Goerck when the city had its common lands surveyed in the late 18th century. His East and West Roads became Fourth and Sixth Avenues, and his cross streets became the numbered streets; the 1811 plan was heavily inspired by his surveys. Today Fifth Avenue separates the East and West streets.
