Named after 61st Street and Woodside, a name 19th-century developers may have chosen.
The station opened in 1917 simply as Woodside. Benjamin W. Hitchcock began developing the area on a large scale in 1867, together with John Andrew Kelly. It may have been Hitchcock or perhaps Kelly who gave it the name Woodside; John A. F. Kelly had already used it in newspaper pieces in the 1850s and 1860s. A late-19th-century author called it an appropriate name.
