Named after 72nd Street, where two small squares honour Verdi and General Sherman.
Where Broadway crosses Amsterdam Avenue at 72nd Street, it leaves triangles of land. Sherman Square was named in 1891 for the U.S. Army general William Tecumseh Sherman, who lived in the area and died that year. Its northern section was dedicated as Verdi Square in 1921, after the Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, whose monument had stood there since 1906.
