Named after Avenue X, near the end of Brooklyn’s alphabet of lettered avenues.
The lettered avenues, from A to Z, run east–west across the flat south-central part of Brooklyn, built up in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as improved public transport arrived. Avenue X is broken into four segments; the one served by this station runs from Boynton Place to East 15th Street.
