Beach 60 St

Arverne Edgemere, Queens

Signed Straiton Avenue, the old name of Beach 60th Street.

The Long Island Rail Road built a station here in 1892 called Straiton Avenue, also known as Arverne–Straiton Avenue. It grew out of a quarrel between the railroad and the lawyer and developer Remington Vernam over the original Arverne station on Gaston Avenue. Straiton Avenue later became Beach 60th Street, and the signs still read Beach 60th Street–Straiton Avenue.
