Named after Bronx Park, whose eastern edge is the street Bronx Park East.
Bronx Park, along the Bronx River, was founded in the late 1880s; its first 640 acres were acquired in 1888–1889. The river is named after the settler Jonas Bronck, and by extension so is the borough. His origin is debated; the official Bronx historian Lloyd Ultan holds that he was Swedish. The station's entrances were built in decorative concrete because Sagamore Street was the new main entrance to Bronx Park.
