Named after Mill Brook, a stream that once ran through the neighbourhood.
The Lenape called the stream Acrahung. It flowed from Gates Place in the north Bronx along what are now Webster and Brook Avenues into the Bronx Kill. In the 19th century it was an important boundary between Bronx estates, including those of the Bathgate and Morris families. Forgotten New York also calls it Saw Mill Creek.
