Named after John Chambers, an 18th-century New York attorney.
Chambers (1710–1764) was an important parishioner at Trinity Church, where he served as vestryman and later as warden. He was the son of William Chambers and the husband of Anna Van Cortlandt. His law partner, John Murray, is remembered in nearby Murray Street.
