Named after New York City Hall, the seat of the city’s government.
Built from 1803 to 1812 in City Hall Park, it houses the mayor’s office and the City Council chambers, and is the oldest city hall in the United States that still houses its original governmental functions. Earlier city halls stood near today’s 73 Pearl Street, built by the Dutch, and at Wall and Nassau Streets, built in 1700 and renamed Federal Hall in 1789.
