Eastchester recalls a colonial town; Dyre Avenue appears to recall an early mayor.
The neighbourhood belonged to the Town of Eastchester until it was annexed by New York City in the late 19th century; that town was first settled in 1664 by ten families from Fairfield, Connecticut. Forgotten New York notes that many northeast Bronx avenues carry the names of long-ago mayors, and that William Dyre was mayor of New York in 1680–81.
