Named after High Street, which once ran past here and was later cut short.
The station stands where High Street once met Washington Street, today’s Red Cross Place and Cadman Plaza East. High Street appears on 1820s maps and probably marked an area of high ground; any hill there has since been levelled. Once eight blocks long, it was cut short by the Manhattan Bridge approach in 1909 and later by a housing project and Cadman Plaza.
