Named after Kings Highway, a colonial road named after Kings County.
Originally an Indian trail, it was recorded in a 1652 deed as ‘Mechawanienck’, ‘the ancient pathway’. In colonial times locals formed ‘King’s Highway’ by connecting roads, cow paths and trails across Kings County. The county had been named in honour of King Charles II of England on 1 November 1683; ‘Kings Highway’ was also a common colonial term for public roads.
