Named after the Marquis de Lafayette, French volunteer in the American Revolution.
Brooklyn honoured foreign supporters of the American Revolution with street names, among them Lafayette. Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757–1834), was a French officer who volunteered to join the Continental Army led by George Washington, and commanded troops at the decisive siege of Yorktown in 1781.
