Middle Village lay midway between Williamsburg and Jamaica.
The village was named in the early 19th century for its position at the midpoint between the then-towns of Williamsburg and Jamaica on the Williamsburgh and Jamaica Turnpike, which opened in 1816. That toll road, built along an old Indian trail, is today's Metropolitan Avenue; the City of Brooklyn bought it from the turnpike company in 1872.
