Nassau Avenue probably recalls the Dutch House of Orange-Nassau.
In the old town of Bushwick it was Fourth Street, later Nassau Street, before becoming Nassau Avenue. Forgotten New York notes that the reference book Brooklyn by Name does not explain the name, but considers it ‘fairly obvious’ that, like the Lower Manhattan street and the county, it honours the House of Orange-Nassau, to which King William III (1650–1702) belonged.
