‘Norwood’ may honour Carlisle Norwood, or simply shorten ‘North Woods’.
The name first appears as Norwood Heights, either in honour of Carlisle Norwood, a friend of Leonard Jerome, or as a contraction of ‘North Woods’. Around the turn of the 20th century the area was also called North Bedford Park, and in 1910 the Board of Aldermen made ‘Brendan Hill’ official, after St Brendan the Navigator and his parish. 205th Street belongs to Manhattan’s grid, continued north.
