Named after Ozone Park, a name chosen to evoke sea breezes, and Lefferts Boulevard.
Benjamin W. Hitchcock and Charles C. Denton developed the area, and the name ‘Ozone Park’ was chosen to lure buyers with the idea of refreshing Atlantic breezes; ozone was then thought healthy. The station actually lies in South Ozone Park. It opened in 1915 as Lefferts Avenue, named for the Lefferts family, early Dutch settlers; the boulevard is 119th Street for its entire run.
