Named after George Law, a developer, not after the saint.
In the 1880s Erastus Wiman, who was extending the Staten Island Railway, needed waterfront land that Law had acquired at bargain prices. According to the island historians Charles Leng and William T. Davis, Wiman promised to ‘canonize’ Law if he gave up his rights for a new railway and ferry terminal. The terminal opened in 1886; by the 1930s the name generally described the north-eastern corner of Staten Island.
