Two old roads: one honours Newport merchants, the other a turnpike company president.
Revolutionary War officer Ebenezer Stevens (1751–1823) named Vernon Avenue after Samuel and William Vernon, Newport merchant bankers who sheltered him after he fled the Boston Tea Party; it became Vernon Boulevard in the 1920s. Jackson Avenue, built in the 1850s as a toll road, is named after John C. Jackson (1809–1899), president of the Hunter’s Point, Newtown and Flushing Turnpike Company.
