Wakefield is named after George Washington’s birthplace in Virginia.
The Bronx neighbourhood takes its name from the Virginia plantation where Washington was born; neighbouring Mount Vernon is named for the plantation where he lived most of his adult life. Wakefield became a village in 1889, taking in the village of Washingtonville. The station was called Becker Avenue while it was being built and opened in 1920 as East 241st Street.
