Botzaris

Paris 19e

Named after the rue Botzaris, which honours Markos Botsaris (born 1788 or 1790, died 1823).

He was one of the heroes of the Greek War of Independence. In 1823, at Karpenisi, he tried to stop an Ottoman army marching on Missolonghi: he entered its camp at night with only 350 men but was killed by a bullet to the head. The street opened in 1862 as the rue de la Vera-Cruz and has borne his name since 1880.
