Named after the porte d'Ivry, the gate on the road to Ivry-sur-Seine.
It was one of the 17 gates cut through the Thiers wall in the mid-19th century, at the end of the avenue d'Ivry, once the 'grande route d'Ivry'. The avenue de la Porte-d'Ivry, named in 1930, lies partly on the site of the old gate. Ivry comes from the Gaulish Eburiacum, 'place of the yew trees'.
