Named after the avenue de Wagram, which recalls the Battle of Wagram.
At Wagram, about 10 km north-east of Vienna, Napoleon’s army defeated the Austrians in July 1809. The avenue and the place de Wagram were named on 2 March 1864, also in honour of Marshal Berthier, Napoleon’s chief of staff and one of the main architects of the victory, who was made Prince of Wagram.
