Jägerstraße

Brigittenau

Named after Jägerstraße, which recalls a huntsman’s house guarding a chapel.

The street was named on 7 December 1858 after the Jägerhaus (‘huntsman’s house’) built next to the Brigittakapelle to protect it; the chapel itself was built between 1645 and 1651. It also gave its name to the whole district: ‘Brigittenau’, first recorded in 1670, comes from it. Before that the area was called Wolfsau and Schottenau.
