Named after the Krieau, a former Prater island once fought over in court.
The Krieau is a former island in the Prater. From the mid-16th century Klosterneuburg Abbey and the City of Vienna disputed its ownership for about seven decades, until it was awarded to Vienna on 19 July 1618. People therefore called it ‘Streitau’ or ‘Kriegsau’ (‘quarrel meadow’, ‘war meadow’); Krieau derives from Kriegsau. The station is named after the trotting track, opened in 1878.
